Grandfather Clocks

Grandfather clocks bring a sense of grandeur and tradition to any space with their regal physical presence and their melodic, comforting sound.

Brief History
The grandfather clock is, basically, a pendulum operated clock (the clock itself works by a system of hanging weights and a pendulum) encased in a large cabinet. The first pendulum operated floor clock was invented in the 1650’s by Dutch scientist, Christian Huygen. A few years later the clock received some improvements in the form of a lovely wood encasement; eventually, chimes were added and the pendulum length was extended to improve accurate timekeeping.

Physical Beauty
Grandfather Clocks satisfy many tastes because they are so varied. There are several crowns to choose from, including the most popular split pediment (with a finial ornament) and bonnet styles. Other styles include federal, flat, and arched crowns. Most grandfathers have moon dials at the top of the clock’s face. Moon dials track the lunar month and display each stage of the moon’s phases. The pendulum serves to keep accurate time; in addition, the pendulum’s glossy circle is hypnotically beautiful as it slowly swings.

A Chime in the Night?
Grandfather clocks generally have switches to shut off their sounding mechanisms without interrupting their timekeeping abilities. Most people choose to use this switch for nighttime, but it can be used anytime.

Cable-Driven
Cable-driven grandfather clocks work through gravity acting on suspended weights, systematically working with a pendulum. The weights lower at a certain rate. Weekly, these weights need to be reset using a key.

Chain-Driven
Chain-driven grandfather clocks require weekly adjusting, just as the cable-driven models do. But instead of using keys, they are reset by pulling the chains to correctly reposition the weights.

Other Maintenance
As with any fine furnishing, they benefit from regularly polishing the cabinet in order to remove dust and fingerprints. Beyond that, they require professional cleaning and oiling every few years.

For all of their size and grandeur, grandfather clocks are easy to maintain. They lend ambience and serenity to any setting and will become a treasured heirloom for generations to come.
